About the vendor
Facing the Sea of Japan, Tango is a land rich in nature that retains the feeling of ancient Japan.
This natural environment and climate is necessary for textile production, and the temperament of the residents has been passed down from generation to generation.
Inspired from nature, our techniques have been cultivated with that background of history and tradition. We pursue the creation of new fabrics with a convergence of natural materials such as silk, sea shells, lacquer, wood and leather.
“If only fabric could be woven from seashells..” – with this wish we created a new technique by fusing the raden, which was developed in Japan as a decoration for lacquer, and the traditional textile technique, hikihaku, which can be translated as “pull-foil”. A thin plate of seashells is cut into a shape and pasted on washi paper, and then thinly cut into threads and woven into the weft.
Breaking the convention, it expresses the sparkle of the sea that shells have as a material with flexibility.
